GUWAHATI: As the Cyclonic Storm Hamoon made landfall in neighbouring Bangladesh, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning regarding possible rains in the northeastern part of the counties.
The Indian Meteorological Department had predicted rains in Meghalaya, Mizoram and parts of Assam. Although heavy rains have not been predicted, the weather system is expected to cause showers accompanied by thunderstorms in the region. With the arrival of the Autumn season, the temperature has gradually come down in the entire northeastern region of the country And the possibility of rains has predicted the further dipping of the mercury levels.
The strength of the cyclone had recently increased as it made landfall in Bangladesh causing significant destruction in the region. Before landfall, the weather system had changed into a Deep Depression over Southeast Bangladesh and Northeast India, especially Mizoram.
The department also mentioned that the cyclone moved over the coastal part of Bangladesh and lay centred about 40 km east-southeast of the port city of Chittagong in Bangladesh. It also predicted wind speeds of up to 80 to 90 kmph with sudden gusts of up to 1000 kmph in the nearby areas. No significant wind movements have however been predicted for the state of Assam.
They also predicted isolated heavy rainfall in parts of Mizoram and light to moderate rains in several parts of Mizoram and Tripura on Wednesday. Also, light to moderate rains were predicted in several places in Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday.
Meanwhile, the fishermen and coastal folk had been advised not to venture into the open seas on these days as a precaution against possible incidents. This warning was issued in Parts of the east coast of India, in Bangladesh and Northern Myanmar till the cyclonic depression completely subsided.
