Darrang: Assam police on Friday took a congress leader into custody for conducting unlawful drug trade.

Hailing from Kawadanga in Assam's Darrang, the accused has been identified as Rahijuddin Ahmed who is the president of the Kaliagaon complex of Congress.

As per reports, around 23 packets of unrefined brown sugar, certain unpacked plastic empty containers and various illegitimate items have been regained from the man's belongings.

Meanwhile, police stated that Ahmed had been continuing drug dealings for several years. A case has now been officially registered and an inquiry has already commenced.

A case has been filed and an investigation is currently underway.

Earlier in a major breakthrough against inter-state smugglers and illegal wholesale dealers trading in opium, team Assam Police's Bordumsa unit in Tinsukia district arrested a drugs kingpin here on Tuesday from along the Assam-Arunachal border area.
