SILCHAR: As anticipated, Susmita Dev’s name did not figure in the list of candidates that her party Trinamool Congress on Monday had published for the ensuing Rajya Sabha election in West Bengal. Susmita’s Rajya Sabha term would end in coming August along with six other TMC Upper House MPs.
On Monday when the TMC high command released the list in Kolkata , Susmita was seen staging hunger strike in her home city against the draft delimitation which had proposed Silchar, the constituency which had sent her both to the Assam Assembly as well as Lok Sabha, to be reserved for the SC community. Reacting to the TMC list, Susmita said, she was thankful to Mamata Banerjee for giving her the chance to represent the party in the Rajya Sabha. Susmita said, in no case her political career would end if she ceased to be a legislator. “The draft delimitation has clearly discriminated Barak Valley, and as a politician and more as a people of this Valley I have to come out on the street to voice against this arbitrary move by the BJP government,” she said. Susmita further said that politics was all about chances, and nobody knows what chances were waiting for whom. Susmita firmly said, her politics would now be outside the Lok Sabha. “ Right at the moment, like any other citizen of Barak Valley, I want to fight this delimitation draft and I surely will. Its a question of our existence. Politics, votes can wait, but existence cannot.”
