GUWAHATI: Large parts of the state face problems because of improper road connectivity. The conditions of these roads further deteriorate during the monsoons, and this problem has been raised by people across several parts of the state.

The developmental works in terms of road infrastructure development have been proved to be a failure, especially in the Rangkhelang- Rongpangbong region. After facing problems related to transportation, the local people decided to repair a 20 km long stretch of road all by themselves through community work. The local people have raised questions against the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council for their failure to create and maintain proper roads in the region and demanded that they implement immediate and concrete steps towards that direction They also pointed out that at a large number of points, people have to cross using risky methods in the lack of proper bridges in the localities. It is noteworthy that this place is located on the border between Assam and Meghalaya.

Similar protests took place in the Biswanath locality of the state. The local people engaged in sloganeering against the authorities and even planted paddy crops as a mark of protest and demanded immediate action. This protest was staged by the people of the main road connecting the Dahatar, Garhbasti, Munda Basti and Number 1 Darang Pathar villages are in a very pitiable state. These localities come under Ward Number 7 in the Biswanath Pabhoi Bamunigaon Panchayat.

The locals mentioned that although they have been demanding the development of this important road for the past 8 years, the authorities have not paid heed to their demands. As a result, the people of these localities have to face problems regarding connectivity, struggling through water and mud over the years.

Unable to bear these problems any further, more than 100 people came out to the street and planted rice crops as a part of the protest. They also shouted slogans against the Lok Nirman Department of the state, the local MLA as well a the local administration. They also mentioned that during the elections, candidates promise to construct the same, but forget about it soon after the elections.
