TAMULPUR: Speaking at a public event on Sunday, the Director General of Police, Assam, appealed to the personnel and officials of Assam Police to be diligent and well-behaved.

The Director General of Police, Assam, Gyanendra Pratap Singh was taking part in the unveiling of the corner stone as well as the organising of Bhumi Pujan for the office of the Superintendent of Police in the Tamulpur District of the state on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, the chief of Assam Police called on the personnel of his department to be well-behaved and diligent. He mentioned that everything else was there on he police uniform itself, but they have to practice being respectful and well-behaved by themselves.

He also added that steps are being taken to ensure that the roads of the state are safe and the public should follow the necessary rules and regulations. He also requested the youth of the state not to follow the steps of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and said that only ULFA knows how many of their cadres have been killed over the years.

Previously, the Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh at the Assam Police headquarters while briefing about the second special drive launched against child marriage. DGP Singh said that a total of 710 cases have been filed and 915 persons out of the 1,100 accused arrested in the second phase of the drive against child marriage. The 915 arrested include 546 husbands, 353 relatives, and 16 solemnisers, like kazis and priests, who conducted the child marriages.

He also said that in the first drive launched against child marriage in February 2023, a total of 4515 cases were registered and 3483 were arrested. 95.5% of the cases registered during the drive have already been issued charge sheets. The police had carried out an extensive field study and gathering of data in the past three months, prior to the launch of the second phase of the drive. During this time, it has emerged that the menace of child marriage has decreased in the state when compared to the situation during the first drive, the DGP maintained.
