GUWAHATI: Assam Director General of Police, Gyanendra Pratap Singh launched the social media account for the Special Task Force (STF), Assam and the Village Defence Organisation (VDO). The handles on Facebook and Twitter were launched during a performance review meeting organised on Monday in Silchar.

The social media accounts of the Special Task Force, Assam and the voluntary Village Defence Organisation have been associated with the Assam Police with the aim of getting connected to the general public as a whole, mentioned a statement issued by Assam Police. Assam Police has also announced the issuing of a phone number 6026901358 for the special task force. The public can call this number directly to provide any information related to narcotics and the statement mentioned that the identities of the person providing such information will be kept confidential by the police.

The Director General of Police is currently on a three-day tour to the Barak Valley region of the state other senior officials of the force have urged the public to utilise these services for the betterment of the society.

Meanwhile, the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) issued a statement on Sunday in which Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh was warned to ‘stop encounter of local people’ by alleging that they were engaged in extortion of money in the name of the outfit. ULFA (I) also denied that those arrested had any links to the outfit and instead suggested that they may have been used by somebody for their own purpose.

The statement also went on to warn the police not to take any indiscriminate action against local people by branding them as collectors of extortion money in the name of ULFA (I). Moreover, the outfit named certain government servants who were siphoning off people’s hard-earned money in the government coffers and also certain people who have amassed great wealth by running coal and Burmese ‘supari’ syndicates. The statement asked the police to target such individuals.
