GUWAHATI: In a bid to clean up the Assam Police and make it more efficient, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh held a video chat with high-ranking officials of the Assam Police on Wednesday.
The primary aim of the video conference was to address the issue of increasing number of complaints recorded against police officers in the state.
During the course of the conference, the DGP urged all officers to keep intact the "izzat" (honour) of the uniform donned by them, trying to impress upon them the necessity of upholding the respect which is associated with the police uniform. Ever since assuming the office of DGP, he has been urging all officers to inculcate the habit of upholding the importance of uniform in conducting their professional duties.
DGP Singh also extolled the virtue of a no-nonsense demeanor and expressed his zero-tolerance policy to bribery in any form within the police force.
A key point that was highlighted by GP Singh in the conference was the warning of strict action that would follow in the event of any sexual offence found to have been committed by police personnel in any police station, outpost, or other official premises.
In the event of any such instances of misconduct brought to light would be dealt with severely, without leaving any room for leniency, making it clear that in case any officer is found to have been involved in such acts, they would face dire consequences.
Moreover, the DGP expressed his distaste on the issue of officers being under the influence of alcohol while reporting for duty. He stated his firm conviction that behaviour of that type would not be tolerated under any cicumstancee, while reiterating the significance of police officers adopting a professional and responsible approach to their duties.
DGP Singh also expressed his thoughts on another matter of concern during the conference. This was the ugly practice of collection of money from commercial vehicles on highways by policemen or home guards on duty. GP Singh was categorical in stating that this practice would not be tolerated under any circumstance, and that he would initiate strict action against anyone found engaging in such illicit activities.
The DGP also expressed his commitment to eliminating the specter of criminal activities indulged in by the police personnel of different ranks. He warned of strict action that would follow in case officers are involved in crimes.
GP Singh further appealed to all gazetted officers to set a high standard for the entire force to follow and lead by example. He espoused the need for senior officers to discuss with the higher authorities cases involving someone’s dismissal from service.
Speaking in a related matter, the DGP asked all officers in the rank of DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police) or above, including ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police), to carry out surprise night visits to police stations, outposts, police posts, and check posts, to ensure the efficient functioning of law enforcement machinery during the hours of dark.
