Assam: Dhemaji Again Hit by Floods, Heavy Rainfall Predicted

GUWAHATI: The weather department has warned Arunachal Pradesh to expect heavy rains this week. Rains and thunderstorms are also expected in the other states of Northeast India and South India. The withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon is expected to cause the necessary conditions for rains in these parts. It is not uncommon to have moderate to heavy spells of rain in this season in the region. These rains cool the weather drastically, making way for winters.

Meanwhile, the ongoing rains in Arunachal Pradesh have already caused the rivers of the state to swell up. Noteworthy among them are the Siang and its tributaries. This has in turn caused flooding in the Dhemaji district. More than 200 families residing in the district have been affected by this round of flooding. Ten villages under the Jonai sub-division of the state of Assam have been submerged by the water.

Several hectares of land under paddy cultivation have been submerged by the recent round of flooding in the state. People, along with their domestic animals, have been forced to retreat to higher grounds by the rising water of the rivers as roads and houses go underwater. The villages under the Dikhari and Telam Village Panchayat areas are the worst affected. Although people have been shifted to higher grounds, shortage of food for humans and livestock as well as drinking water is going to be a serious concern.

With the warnings of more rain, people in the nearby regions need to take precautions as well. Some damage has been reported from the mega-dam under construction by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) due to landslides in the region as the state faces another round of flooding this year. Rising water levels have been reported from the Dibrugarh district as well.

The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah had told that the flood problem of the state will be resolved in the next five years as per the BJP manifesto during the inauguration of the new BJP office in Guwahati.
