LAKHIMPUR: Expressing discontentment against alleged anti-public policy and activities on the part of the Assam State BJP and losing the trust and faith upon a section of party leaders, as many as seventeen BJP leaders of Lakhimpur district joined Congress on Friday.

Notable among these disgruntled BJP leaders are former Lakhimpur district unit BJP president Kusha Sarmah, former vice-president Narayan Baruah, former district general secretary Jyoti Borgohain, former president of Lakhimpur district Kissan Marcha Kushal Hajarika, former coordinator of District Media Cell Nityananda Mili. In addition to them, Dhakuakhana BJP leaders Asim Payeng, member Ghanakanta Sonowal, Dhan Basumatary, Booth president Khagen Konwar, Biswajit Sarmah, ward member Popy Sonowal, former Mandal president Lakhimai Baruah joined Congress after quitting the BJP. On the other hand, Dhakuakhana Committee AGP assistant secretary Surya Patit and youth leader Nripen Borpatra Gohain also joined Congress quitting the AGP. They joined Congress in a ceremonial programme organized at Bhogpur under Narayanpur area of the district in the presence of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah. The event was held under the management of Lakhimpur district Congress Committee (LDCC) general secretary Gangajyoti Tayegam and Arun Hazarika. APCC Media Cell vice-chairperson Bedabrat Borah was also present in the joining programme along with other Congress leaders. In the joining programme, Nityananda Mili spewed venom against BJP and the Chief Minister regarding various issues.

Notably, after the dissatisfaction against a section of party leaders and resignation of Former Union Minister Rajen Gohain as chairman of the Assam Food and Civil Supplies Corporation Limited, the trouble in the Assam unit of the BJP spread to Lakhimpur district ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year. At a time when Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma denied any kind of dissatisfaction on the part of the veteran leaders and members of Assam BJP, by saying that the ‘Old BJP-New BJP’ concept was the creation of media, 9 veteran leaders of the Lakhimpur BJP quit the party on August 25. Then they said that they had decided to quit the party because of the current public dissatisfaction against the activities of Assam BJP and the incumbent State Government. They also alleged that several issues like price hike, syndicate, recent dissidence and killing of democratic spirit in the party had prompted them for taking decision to quit the BJP.
