Assam: District advisory committee meet held in Nagaon

NAGAON: A meeting of the District Advisory Committee on pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic techniques (prohibition of sex selection) Act, 1994 (PC&PNDT) was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Joint Director of Health Services of Nagaon, Dr Arupjyoti Mahanta at the office chambers of the Additional Chief Medical & Health Officer (FW), Nagaon.

The chairperson gave a brief insight regarding the purpose of the meeting explaining that one of the primary purposes of the Act is to prevent sex selection by expecting families and preventing female feticide amongst other objectives. Delivering the welcome address, the newly-appointed Additional CM&HO (FW), Nagaon, Dr Kabita Barua opened the floor for discussion and invited queries from the present committee members. The DEMO Uday Ch Deka gave a brief on the current status of the implementation of the Act in Nagaon and Hojai districts.

He mentioned that over 62 functioning Ultra Sonography Centres, 26 radiologists, 7 oncologists, 16 gynecologists and 4 cardiologists were rendering the services in those districts. He also shared that the application process to open any new Ultra Sonography Centres was also currently made available via online application. Besides, the special expert team from District Health Department is constantly monitoring and inspecting for any flouting of PC&PNDT Act 1994 norms by the diagnostics centres, he added further.

District Information and Public Relations Officer of Nagaon, Ankita Gogoi, representatives from District Social Welfare Department, NGO and other officials concerned from the District Health Department were also present in the meeting, an official release added.
