LAKHIMPUR: Vipin Gupta, Executive Director of NHPC’s 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Project, on Friday inaugurated the dormitory building of Common Facility Centre (CFC) constructed at Moharicamp, in the Dhemaji district in the presence of Rajendra Prasad, Group General Manager, and other senior officials of NHPC. The Common Facility Centre CFC) is owned by the SAAR Pig Producer Company Limited formed under the Piggery Livelihood Intervention project sponsored by NHPC Ltd.

On the occasion, silage cutter machines were also distributed amongst the female pig farmers. Speaking on the occasion, Vipin Gupta, Executive Director, Subansiri Lower HE Project, reiterated NHPC’s commitment towards all-round development of the people in and around its project areas. He also interacted with the beneficiaries of the project and had their feedback on the implementation of this initiative.

On the other hand, while expressing her views, Hiranya Pegu of Kachutali PPG said that during the initial phase of this piggery project in 2018, she like some of other beneficiaries were apprehensive about the programme. But over these years, they have realized the immense benefits this piggery project has brought not only in their financial well-being but also through scientific know-how of piggery. Similar views were echoed by other beneficiaries like Kanaklata Hazarika of Naharbari PPG and Barnali Sonowal of Dakhin Nalbari PPG who have become more quality-conscious in their pig rearing and breeding after this piggery intervention of NHPC.

SAAR Pig Producers Company Ltd is a 2,500-female member (from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts) company funded by NHPC under its downstream developmental initiatives. This facility will have India’s biggest pig breeding farm with 400 high-quality pigs apart from scientific slaughter house, nursery units, furrowing sheds, feed mill and storage units as well as training centre for future interventions by the company. Piggery project is one of the three livelihood projects under NHPC Ltd, other than sericulture and handloom projects. These livelihood projects are being implemented in consultation with Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA).
