NAGAON: A notorious drug peddler wanted by the police since a long time now, has been injured in a police firing at Bortal locality in Rupohihat under Nagaon district of Assam on Sunday night.
The wanted drug dealer, identified as Ramizul Islam, reportedly suffered bullet injuries in his leg and was immediately rushed to Nagaon civil hospital for treatment.
According to sources, the notorious criminal Ramizul was known to have been involved in drug trafficking for a long time in the district. Although he has been arrested twice before, he was later released on bail and allegedly resumed peddling of drugs in the area.
The drug peddler was attempting to escape apprehension by the police when he was shot at by the police, resulting in his injury and capture, sources added.
Following up a tip-off, Nagaon police conducted an operation and recovered as many as 75 drug-filled containers from the possession of Ramizul.
The shot and injured Ramizul Islam is a resident of Nangaldhua in Nagaon district.
Earlier, on April 22, a drug trafficker was injured in police firing in an incident that took place at Kaliabor’s Hatbagan area in Nagaon district of Assam.
The firing incident occurred when during a raid on a suspected drug supplier's hideout conducted by the police at night. The accused, identified as Saddam Hussain, tried to escape under the cover of darkness, and the police had resort to firing to apprehend him.
The notorious drug trafficker suffered bullet injuries in his leg and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. However, he was later transferred to Nagaon for better treatment, due to the severity of his injuries.
A large quantity of drugs and other illegal substances had been recovered by the police from the hideout. An investigation is currently underway to identify and apprehend any other members of the drug trafficking network involved in the incident.
This is yet another incident in a series of similar encounters in the state. The police have been working tirelessly to crack down on drug trafficking and other illegal activities in the region.
