GUWAHATI: On Saturday morning, the Jorhat district of Assam was shaken by an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6. There were tremors reported in the nearby areas as well.
The 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck Jorhat at 9:03 a.m. at a depth of 50 km, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). However, no casualties or property damage have yet been reported.
Parts of Assam were also shaken early on March 8th by an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake was detected in the Kamrup district at a depth of 10 kilometres around 3:59 a.m. There were no reports of property damage or fatalities brought on by the earthquake.
In the early hours of Tuesday, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck Tura in Meghalaya. The National Centre for Seismology provided information for this. The centre reports that the earthquakes started around 6.57 a.m.
Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.7, Occurred on February 28, 2023, 06:57 IST, Lat: 26.04 and Long: 90.11, Depth: 29 Km, Location: 59 kilometres north of Tura, Meghalaya, India, the centre tweeted.
Earlier, Dr N. Purnachandra Rao, the Chief Scientist of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), had issued a warning about the likelihood of a large earthquake occurring in India soon.
According to Rao, the Indian plate is moving roughly five centimetres each year, which is causing tension to build up along the Himalayas and may cause an earthquake in Uttarakhand.
He was reported by ANI as adding, "The surface of the earth is made up of many plates that are continually moving. The Indian plate is shifting by 5 cm annually, which causes tension to build up along the Himalayas and increases the likelihood of a larger earthquake.”
"The area between Himachal Pradesh and the western section of Nepal, including Uttarakhand, is known as the seismic gap and is prone to earthquakes that may erupt at any time," he added.
