GUWAHATI: Government of Assam on Saturday (May 20) sets dress code for school teachers. According to the notification, teachers are advised not to wear jeans, t-shirts, leggings, party wear casual dresses etc.
According to the official notification, “It has come to the notice of the undersigned that some teachers of educational institutions are found in the habit of wearing the dress of their choice which sometimes does not appear to be acceptable by public at large. Since a teacher is expected to be an example of all sorts of decency especially while discharging their duties, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism, and seriousness of purpose at the workplace”.
The notification further stated that “In view of the above, Government in Department of School Education is hereby pleased to prescribe the following dress code for teachers of all educational institutions.
1. Male teachers should attend their duties in appropriate Formal Attire only (Formal Shirt-Pant and not Casual Attire such as T-Shirt, Jeans etc.)
2. Female teachers should attend their duties in a decent Salwar Suit/Saree/Mekhela-Chador and not Casual Attire such as T-Shirt, Jeans, Leggings etc.
3. Both male and female teachers should be dressed up in clean, modest, and decent clothes in sober colors, which should not look flashy. Casual and party apparel should be strictly avoided.
The above order shall be complied with scrupulously by all concerned and any deviation from this may invite disciplinary action as per rules”.
Meanwhile, in the year 2022, the BJP government in Assam issued a 'dress code' for Assembly secretariat personnel in Dispur. As a result, both male and female personnel were urged to avoid wearing casual clothing while on duty.
According to an official order, women were required to wear sarees, salwar-kameez, and mekhela-chador, while males were required to wear formal shirts and pants.
According to the notification, the new dress code prohibits Secretariat personnel from wearing jeans, t-shirts, or leggings.
Even journalists covering Assembly events would be required to dress according to government norms.
The ruling was issued on the instructions of Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimari and will apply to both daily wage and fixed pay employees.
