SILCHAR: The State government was not at all abolishing teaching in vernacular medium, but as per the need of the hour, English would be introduced in teaching mathematics and science only in a phased manner, stated Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu. In clear terms, Pegu, who reached Silchar to inspect the ongoing Gunotsav, said, a section of people without perusing through the government policy had started making hues and cries alleging that vernacular medium would be abolished. Pegu said, "The State government on July 28 came with the historic decision of implementing dual medium of instruction in Assamese and other vernacular government school. The respective school authority would be at liberty to introduce English medium without abolishing the parent vernacular medium. Five to ten schools in each district would be identified for introducing dual medium and number of such schools would be increased gradually depending on the outcome of the move."
He further said, "The government was seriously pondering over the renovation of schools which were badly affected in the recent flood. Initially we will see as to what extent repairing works could be done in these schools out of SDRF fund. The rest would certainly be taken care of by the government."
Education Minister on Friday took stock of Gunotsav in Cachar district. He visited Brajo Govindo School at Salganga in Udharbond and Adharchand HS School in Silchar.
