GUWAHATI : Recently, Guwahati HC received a petition seeking the installation of electrical or LPG crematoriums in Assam. Taking action on the appeal, HC has directed all the concerned departments to make all preparations to set up electric crematoriums in a phased manner.. 

These crematoriums will be installed in all District headquarters. Bijan Chakraborty, the petitioner, issued the appeal in person. The petitioner requested the High Court to issue an order, advising the authorities to carry out steps in establishment of the electric or LPG crematoriums. 

The petition also mentioned that, the authorities should make the public aware of the environment friendly benefits of the electric crematoriums. It also included that, steps should be taken by the departments to encourage people to utilise the same for cremation purposes.

Apart from that, an appeal has been made to spread the information regarding the existence of Green Cremation Pyres, and it's importance through various social media platforms like TV, radio and newspaper. The petition emphasised on motivating the public in this regard.

The order by Guwahati High Court stated that, Bijan Chakraborty has taken the Court through the real issues while stating the importance and benefits of electric/LPG crematorium as compared to traditional method of cremation. HC also stated that, Mr. Bijan Chakraborty, the petition in person, attracted the attention on how traditional method of the cremation process affects the environment. The trees are destroyed and damaged because of it.

The fact that many states outside Assam has established electric crematories, it is now high time that Assam should also work towards protecting the environment and wildlife. D Saikia, the Advocate General, expressed that, even though the facility has been made available in certain places, the public mostly prefer the traditional method on emotional grounds.

HC mentioned that, the concerned authorities will carry out the process in a phased manner however, as expeditiously as possible.
