Assam: Elephant Dies From Electrocution In Morigaon

GUWAHATI : Another elephant reportedly died due to electrocution in Assam, adding to then already long list of wild elephants that lost their lives this year.

In an unfortunate episode, an elephant was found dead in Assam's Morigaon district. 

According to the forest department officials, the jumbo lost his life as a result of electrocution in a paddy field. The incident took place at the Daponibori area in Dharamtul. The body of the elephant was spotted by the local people in the paddy field. 

The news was then immediately relayed to the forest department. According to sources, the elephant might have been electrocuted after it touched a live electric wire, that was kept to keep the wild animals away from the paddy fields. 

According to officials, it has been assumed that the jumbo might have come out in search of food when the sad episode happened. It was around 35 years old, stated the forest officials. The department has already initiated an investigation regarding the matter. 

This year, another case was reported in the famous Manas National Park in Assam, where a female elephant died after being electrocuted by a power line. The incident occurred in the Bhuyanpara Range of the animal reserve. The forest department claimed that the jumbo got electrocuted after coming in touch with an electric wire. It is assumed that the elephant sneaked into the area in search of food. 

Three months prior to this case, another jumbo death was reported due to electrocution in Kaziranga National Park. 

As per a forest department data, a number of 113 elephant deaths has been reported in the state due to electrocution, between 2009-2020. 

According to sources, most of the jumbo deaths are a result of drooping power lines and illicit electric fences put up by the villagers to keep wild animals and elephants away from getting into their fields and homes. The elephants get electrocuted after coming into contact with these electric wires.
