Assam: Extreme Cold Kills Another Person At Lumding Railway Station

GUWAHATI: Death continues to loom over those who are sleeping on train platforms and highway medians as the temperature drops and the bitter winter chill sets in. In the Hojai district of Assam, another person has been discovered dead at the Lumding Railway Station, most likely from the extreme cold.

On the evening of Friday, January 6, a woman was discovered dead at platform no. 1 of the railroad station. Witnesses who spotted the motionless body believed the victim had perished from the chilly weather. Durga Chakrabarty has been named as the deceased woman, according to sources with the Railway Police.

In the interim, a police inquiry has been opened to determine the precise cause of the woman's demise. On January 5, at least two persons, including a lady, were found dead at Lumding Railway Junction. Sources claim that the lack of quilts to shield them from the extreme cold is what caused the folks to pass away.

The deceased has been begging at the Junction for a very long time. Because the state is witnessing a drop in temperature, the beggars were unable to survive the extreme cold and died as a result. Another young man was found dead in his Guwahati bedroom on Sunday, January 1 under unexplained circumstances.

Young Emil Murmu, a cook at the "Maa" restaurant in Adabari, hails from the Sonitpur district. The city's Adabari neighbourhood is where the incident was reported. By the time the police arrived on the site, the body had already been transported to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a post-mortem.

Another instance involving a baby who died at the age of one and a half months owing to alleged police indifference in Karimganj caused a commotion in the neighbourhood. The incident allegedly occurred as a result of a police checkup at Tongibari hamlet, which is part of the Ratabari constituency in the district, delaying the administration of medication to Hifjur's sick child.
