GUWAHATI: Nellie police on Sunday seized fake gold bars from a gang of frauds when they were about to palm off the fake booty to a person from Kerala, who is still to be identified.

The police laid a trap for the fraudsters in the Nellie area of Morigaon district in Assam upon learning about their move to sell the fake gold and caught the three fraudsters.

The fake gold, weighing 1kg 875 grams, was seized by the police. The three fraudsters reportedly planned to sell the fake gold to the person from Kerala at a price of Rs 30 lakh.

Police arrested the three fraudsters along with fake gold and identified them as Taijul Islam, Ziarul Islam, and Jabir Ansari, according to Nellie police.

Three mobile phones were also seized by the police from the fraudsters belonging to Nagaon district. Police also registered a case in this connection and an investigation has been launched, sources said.

Fake gold has become a thriving business for fraudsters and many such incidents have been reported earlier also.

On the night of October 18, a team of police from the Gorchuk Police Station, under the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD), arrested one Bhanu Begum of Bongaigaon after she was caught dealing in fake gold bars at Katahbari in attempts to dupe people. Police sources said that 4 kg of fake gold bars was seized from her possession, adding that a case (No 314/22) has been registered at the Gorchuk Police Station.

Earlier, on August 8, acting on a tip-off based on input provided by Gajraj Military Intelligence, Sonitpur Police launched an operation and arrested one person with fake gold biscuits near Mission Charali under Tezpur Sadar Police Station. The arrested person has been identified as Amir Hussain (23), resident of Khalihamari in Sonitpur district on Sunday. Amir Hussain was allegedly involved in selling fake gold and duping defence personnel posted in and around Tezpur and Solmara Military Stations. Two fake gold biscuits, one motorcycle bearing registration number AS12 AE 5147 and one mobile phone were recovered from him, official sources said.
