GUWAHATI: According to reports that surfaced on Thursday, ferry services have been discontinued due to the Brahmaputra River's rising water level in Majuli, Assam.
According to reports, the Brahmaputra River's rising water level prompted the water transport agency to order the suspension of ferry services at Majuli's Aphalamukh Ferry Ghat.
As per the information obtained, the rising water levels caused up to three ferry ramps to be flooded. As a result, all ferry services between Nimati Ghat and Aphalamukh Ferry Ghat were halted. The Inland Water Transport Department relayed the directive.
One nearby ferry owner who spoke about the suspension of ferry services claimed that they were forced to send the ferries away since they could not be parked. All ferry services have been halted as of right now due to rising water levels, he declared. How long the services will be interrupted is unknown.
“Rupesh, as the boat was called, could not be parked, so we had to send it away. As the water levels rose, the ferry ramps became submerged. As the river bank is not very stable and some of the land mass is being swept away, we are unable to construct additional ramps. Ferry services will therefore continue to be banned for the foreseeable future," he added.
Another ferry operator stated, "Most of the ferry services have been stopped due to the abrupt surge in Brahmaputra river levels. We are attempting to set up alternative transportation for travellers to cross the river.”
"We must evaluate the water levels. We will initially construct ramps to enable vessels to park if it is possible. The passengers who want to cross over will feel more at ease as a result. The water level determines how we must proceed. We will take steps to relocate there if the water level recedes and it is possible to build ramps at the old ghat,” he continued.
