A CORRESPONDENT
LAKHIMPUR: Participatory Varietal Field Day of Rice Variety Cafeteria was conducted at Assam Agricultural University- Zonal Research Station (ZRS) , North Lakhimpur on Tuesday. A total of 100 participants including farmers, scientists from ZRS, North Lakhimpur; Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Lakhimpur and officials from District Agriculture Office actively participated in the event.
The programme started with a welcome speech delivered by Dr. Prabal Saikia, Chief Scientist, AAU- ZRS, North Lakhimpur where he highlighted importance of crop cafeteria . He put emphasis on the role and responsibility of farmers, especially the women farmers in selection of best variety and its dissemination. Dr. Neeraj Kumar Tyagi, Senior Specialist, IRRI described the characteristics of the paddy varieties, procedure for evaluation, selection criteria as per the present scenario of climate change and need of the participatory varietal evaluation of paddy crop. The technical session of the programme was carried out by Dr. Yater Das, Junior Scientist, AAU- ZRS, North Lakhimpur and Jutika Das, Researcher, IRRI. In the programme, the male participants were provided with ten two different colour charts– pink for positive voting and white for negative voting whereas the female participants were given yellow colour chart for positive and blue for negative voting. The programme ended with the announcement of result where the variety CR Sugandh Dhan 909 topped the rank. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Nripen Gogoi, Junior Scientist, AAU- ZRS, North Lakhimpur.
