BISWANATH CHARIALI: The campaign to eradicate vector-borne disease filariasis or Godha was launched in Biswanath on Thursday.

On this occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner and sub-divisional magistrate in-charge of Biswanath, Dr Neha Yadav inaugurated the ‘Mass Drug Administration’ (MDA) programme at a function held at the Block Primary Health Centre, Biswanath. The programme was formally launched by providing anti-filariasis medicines free of cost by the health and family welfare department of the state government to ten people of Biswanath. Dr Moushumi Bhattacharya, Advisor, Central Government and Dr Ranjana Chhetri, State Nodal Officer, State Government and others were present as observers at the special event, which was conducted by District Programme Manager Haren Gogoi.

This special drive is being conducted in only four block primary health centres in the state.According to the information, areas of Hapjan Block Primary Health Centre in Tinsukia district, Rangapara Block Primary Health Centre in Sonitpur district, Biswanath Chariali and Behali Block Primary Health Centres in Biswanath district were selected for such campaigns. The presence of filariasis has been detected in the body of some people in these areas. Therefore, in these filaria-dominated areas, a ‘Mass Drug Administration’ programme is being organized from August 31 to September 9.

On the other hand, around hundreds of school students reportedly fell ill in some schools in the northern part of Biswanath after consuming filariasis medicines. The condition of the students of FAA High School of Biswanath Ghat and Goaltoli LP School deteriorated and they were admitted to Biswanath Chariali Civil Hospital. However, the students were released after providing treatment. Getting information, higher officials of civil and police administration reached the spot and managed to control the situation.
