GUWAHATI: A fisherman from Assam's South Salmara district was killed along the India-Bangladesh border.
According to reports, locals alleged that he was shot by BSF personnel while the victim was out to lay nets for fishing in the Gudoli village.
The victim has been identified as Maniruzzaman.
South Salmara's Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) Saifur Ali speaking to the media said that the injured fisherman collapsed and died on the way back to his home.
Meanhwhile investigating the incident the local police went to the BSF camp for investigations, however, BSF has not admitted that the firing was done by their personnel.
"We are conducting an investigation and exploring all angles", said Saifur Ali.
On the other hand, district officials claimed that it may have been a case of mistaken identity with the BSF personnel suspecting the fisherman to be a smuggler.
Earlier in April, a cattle smuggler was shot dead and two sustained bullet injuries in an encounter with police at Bherbheri under Sapatgram Police Station of Dhubri district.
Senior police when contacted by The Sentinel, informed that the Dhubri Police team, based on secret information on illegal transportation of cattle by car, laid Naka near the Sapatgram Police Station. As tipped off, an Indigo ECS car bearing registration number AS17E 0837 coming from Kokrajhar's side was seen fast moving towards Nayahat. The police team had signalled the car to stop at the Naka point but the car did not obey the police signal and fled away, a senior police official further informed.
"The police team at Naka then chased the car for a long time and signalled the car several times to stop but instead of stopping, the car knocked the police vehicle and tried to escape. When they reached near a bridge at Ravantari village under Sapatgram Police Station, suddenly the miscreants in the car started firing at the police party and in retaliation, police had to fire," he added.
