Assam Flood: Special Flight Between Guwahati And Silchar To Resume From June 18

Guwahati: In view of floods and landslides caused by incessant rain, the Assam government has resumed a special flight between Guwahati and Silchar from June 18.

The government will provide this facility through the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC).

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced the same.

''In wake of incessant rains and disrupted connectivity with Barak Valley, we're resuming govt subsidized flights bn Ghy & Silchar, from June 18. This is being done in association with ATDC and Fly Big. I advise all stranded passengers not to panic, and get the bookings,'' Sarma tweeted.

The passengers can book flights from ATDC Head Office, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati, and Deputy Commissioner's office, Cachar. Tickets can also be booked by dialing 8135902973 or via email at atdcflightservice@gmail.com.

Reportedly, the decision comes after the fare of air tickets shoot up due to the communication between Barak Valley with the rest of the state and the country got affected due to the flood and landslide caused by heavy rainfall over the past few days.

Taking advantage of the situation, private flyers immediately started to hike airfares for the Silchar-Guwahati flight. For Friday's single ticket for the 40-minute journey from Guwahati to Silchar, they were now charging Rs 12,500 against the normal rate of Rs 5,500.

It is to be mentioned that more than 11.09 lakh people have been affected across 25 districts of the state. As many as four people have lost their lives in Assam in the last 24 hours owing to the massive floods.

The water level of the Manas, Pagladiya, Puthimari, Kopili, Gaurang, and Brahmaputra rivers are flowing above the danger level mark in many places in Assam.

As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 1510 villages under 72 revenue circles are currently submerged in water along with 19782.80 hectares of cropland.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted that the northeastern region will continue to receive heavy rainfall till June 17 and also issued a red alert for the state of Assam and Meghalaya.
