SILCHAR: Maintaining that the Silchar flood is a result of utter administrative failure, State Congress president Bhupen Bora demanded a special package for the people of flood ravaged town. Bora, who visited Bethukandi, where a dyke was allegedly breached by miscreants that caused inundation of almost entire town, said there was a nexus between some government officials and contractors.

APCC working president Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha on the hand pointed fingers at Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy and MLA Dipayan Chakraborty as he said if CBI investigates the dyke mystery then Silchar would definitely see by-election for both Lok Sabha and Assembly seats. Those who breached the dyke were definitely guilty but at same time those who stopped the completion of the sluice gate were equally guilty and they should also be punished, Purkayastha further added.

Bhupen Bora on the other hand said, the people of Silchar had to suffer such a traumatic deluge that caused immense loss of property only because of administrative negligence. The sluice gate at Bethukandi was a project sanctioned by the then Congress government of Tarun Gogoi, but the present government pushed it to the cold storage, he alleged. Bora said, Congress would raise the demand for House Committee in the Assembly as the incident deserved an investigation by a higher agency. Chief Minister should immediately announce a package for Silchar, he added.
