LAKHIMPUR: The flood situation in Lakhimpur district has been worsening day by day. The third wave of the flash flood has inundated new areas due to inclement weather and incessant rain going on continuously since Wednesday. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the present deluge has pushed the people and the livestock of the affected areas to a miserable plight.
Though a total of 140 revenue villages under 6 Revenue Circles (RC) in the district had been affected till Friday, the present wave of flash flood inundated 16 more villages on Saturday, increasing the number of affected villages up to 153.
On Saturday, flood caused by various rivers of the district inundated four new villages under Bihpuriya RC, four in Narayanpur RC, two in Subansiri RC and six in Dhakuskhana RC afresh. On the other hand, flood receded from five villages under Kadam RC. At present, 62 villages under Bihpuriya RC, 36 villages under Naoboicha RC, 24 villages under Narayanpur RC, 10 villages under North Lakhimpur RC, six villages under Kadam RC and seven villages under Subansiri RC and six villages under Dhakuskhana RC are under flood water.
The wave of flood has caused lot of infrastructural damage in the affected areas. The flood caused by River Joyhing has damaged the counter bundh from Joyhing bridge to Morasali under North Lakhimpur RC. River Pisala breached an agriculture bundh at Major Doloni under Narayanpur RC. On the other hand, River Charikoriya eroded away the Chetiyagaon to Chutimukh connecting road at Chainage No 230.00M under Dhakuskhana RC.
Similarly, road stretched from Chainage No. 8500.00M to 8600.00M of Dolohat Tiniali to Mohghuli via Kolakhowa is under flood in Naoboicha RC. Flood has submerged the side approach of Bridge No. 9/1 along Bongalmora Garchiga Road and damaged the road at Chainage No. 4800.00 M to 7100.00M of the same RC. In addition to them, almost seven roads under Naoboicha RC have been submerged by flood caused by River Singara and Bokanadi at various places. One electricity 11KV pole was uprooted by flood at Sonapur in Bihpuriya RC. Several schools and other social institutions have been submerged by flood in the affected areas.
As per report found from the district administration, the present deluge has hit a total of 82,387 people, 2054.65 hectares of crop area, 11,810 big animals, 5,409 small animals and 3,693 poultry. The district administration distributed relief items at six relief distribution points, one under Kadam RC, three under Subansiri RC and two under North Lakhimpur RC on Saturday. There are 30 inmates in the relief camp which was opened at Sonapur Buniyadi LP School under Naoboicha RC on Friday.
On the other hand, the water level in the catchment area of Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant (RHEP) is rising due to heavy rainfall since Friday As a result of it, NEEPCO released the excess water from the Ranganadi dam by opening the Dam Gate No. 5 by 200 mm since 6:00 pm, by 500 mm from 8.00pm, by 300mm from 10.30pm, on Friday, by 500mm from 4:00am, by 600mm from 11.30am on Saturday. Water has been released from the Ranganadi dam by opening the same gate by 400mm from 1.30pm till the time of filing this report.
