MANGALDAI: Volunteers of Gauhati University (GU) Campus National Social Service (NSS) led by Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kakati, Director, Students' Welfare & Programme coordinator, NSS Cell, GU and Dr Rituparna Borah, NSS PO, showing solidarity towards the flood-affected villagers have come forward on Sunday to extend their helping hands to the people of Rangamati Gaon Panchayat area- the worst flood-hit area of Darrang district. The team of 17 young volunteers distributed packets of dry foods in addition to sanitary pads, candles, mosquito repellent coils etc to nearly 250 families of villages namely Niz Rangamati, Choto Nagaon and Bor Nagaon. Talking to this correspondent Programme coordinator, NSS Cell, GU, Dr Kakati said that this mission could be made successful with the voluntary contribution of the GU family including its Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pratap Jyoti Handique, faculty members, all the hostel boarders, few officers and the student fraternity.

Earlier a similar effort was also made by the family of Mangaldai College led by its principal Dr Kamala Kanta Bora where they distributed relief materials to more than 300 families taking shelter on the Saktola river embankment and at Aulachowka and Pipora Dokan relief camps. Drinking water in tankers was also provided to the public of the flood-hit villages. NCC girls of the college among others were instrumental in the effort. On other hand few local NGOs like Crystal Vision and Unnayan Mancha and some individuals including Dr Kamaleswar Nath, Dr Rama Kanta Bora, Dr Jayanta Kumar Nath etc have also extended helping hands to these flood-hit people either by supplying goods for their day to day need or by organising free health check-up camps.
