SILCHAR: A NDRF team comprising of 105 personnel from Bhubaneswar reached Silchar on Tuesday by a special IAF craft and immediately swung into action. With modern equipment they had rescued a good number of people. Newer places in Silchar town had been inundated on Tuesday with water level overtopping the ground floor.

The vibrant town wore a horrific look with sea-like water flowing in great speed right on the main roads. Situation was so grim that even performing cremation was a herculean task as the Silchar Smashanghat, the main crematory was inundated.

Amid this catastrophe, a couple of news brought some relief for the valley. Heavy vehicles started to ply in Jowai Badarpur road after landslide debris was cleared in Sonapur area. On Monday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured that one lakh litres of fuel would be airlifted for Barak Valley on Tuesday. But as the road transport resumed, fuel tankers were reportedly started to reach Silchar. On the other hand, a train between Haflong and Badarpur was run by NF railway on trial basis.
