HAFLONG: Road between Haflong and Silchar town is now temporarily open for smaller vehicles till it is restored permanently. The officials from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Public Works Department (PWD) are dedicatedly clearing the roads where major landslides occurred so that vehicles can keep running and supply of groceries and other essentials can take place. Haflong headquarters is now accessible via road to the state capital Guwahati as well as Silchar town in Cachar district.

Even as the devastations caused by the landslides due to incessant rains last week almost stranded the entire district with ravaged roads, rail tracks and other infrastructures, temporary restoration of roads was immediately taken care of with full dedication by the departments so that food stocks and other essentials do not run out in Dima Hasao markets.

Fearing rates of commodities at markets to shoot up unevenly, the authorities of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council as well as the District Administration issued orders controlling the rates as per earlier costs. CEM Debolal Gorlosa as well as Deputy Commissioner Nazreen Ahmed physically went around the market visiting shopkeepers and merchants so that they do not hike the prices further aggravating the public.

Food materials have been air dropped by IAF (Indian Air Force) in interior places such as Khepre, Hajadisa and Laisong. Places such as Purana Leikul and Hejaichak could not be transported the essentials by helicopter due to technical issues and unsuitable landing at these two locations.

Dima Hasao Deputy commissioner Nazreen Ahmed said, " A total of 30 metric tons of food materials such as dal, rice, mustard oil, potato etc were sent to Harangajao on Monday and an addition of 9 metric tons of other essentials were air dropped.

All the stranded passengers were immediately airlifted by the Indian Air Force in coordination with the Dima Hasao DC Nazreen Ahmed, ACS and also food supplies were air dropped. 5 officials of APRO ( Assam Police Radio Organisation) were rescued by NDRF from the hill top of Mahadevtilla, where the central point of the wireless terminal stations functions. APRO wireless system has been set up at Harangajao in the evening on Monday.

High Frequency sets have been installed for the first time in Dima Hasao district of Assam at various sites that include police stations at Mahur, Harangajao, Maibang , Haflong SP office , DC office, Diyungmukh. Any person in the interior village may go to the nearest police station for help or for transmission.

Team of officials from UNICEF and North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) have camped at DC's office supporting the work force in the present situation at the district. In some places where power supply was snapped, the District Disaster Management Authority has given solar lamps.

The restoration works of railway communication between Maibang-New Haflong and New Haflong and Badarpur are being done on war footing. On Monday several machines like excavator and tractors were engaged for clearing the approach road upto New Haflong Railway Station.
