Guwahati: The present flood situation in Assam, which has left lakhs of people displaced, is favouring cattle smuggling to Bangladesh as Eid is nearing.
As per a report by News 18, the police have received information indicating that the floods have turned out to be a favourable condition for the smugglers.
The report, also claimed that as Eid is nearing, the demand for cows in Bangladesh has increased following which the smugglers are taking advantage of floods to smuggle cows to the neighbouring country Bangladesh.
Recently, a tweet by Assam Police asserted that cattle smuggling took place through the Brahmaputra river.
"Recent vigorous action by SSM Police against cattle smuggling in the Brahmaputra river under Sukchar PS of South Salmara Mankachar district.@assampolice @DGPAssamPolice @gpsinghips," the tweet said.
News 18 quoting sources further mentioned in its report that the cows are tied up to banana trunks, which can float in water. The head portion of cows is kept on top and a minimum of 100 cows are smuggled every day.
"All these cows have a mark on them, at times number is written on them too. Here, the Brahmaputra and Gadhadar rivers are spread widely. Flood water, river water all have merged and in this situation, if earlier 300 cattle were smuggled, now that number has doubled," News 18 quoted a local officer of the region as saying.
According to official data, ever since the BJP-led Assam government came to the power, the state police have registered more than 1,100 cases of cattle smuggling.
The police have also apprehended 992 smugglers, rescued more than 9,454 cattle, and seized 417 vehicles.
