Assam: Food poisoning in Dhakuakhana; over 100 people affected
LAKHIMPUR: A food poisoning incident came to light in Dhakuakhana subdivision of the Lakhimpur district in which over 100 people were affected and they had to undergo treatment at Dhakuakhana Subdivisional Civil Hospital and Dhemaji District Civil Hospital.
As per information received, the incident took place at No. 1 Thekeraguri village under the subdivision on Saturday night. Some people, who consumed prasad served at a religious event at the village Namghar held in connection with ‘Bhadiya Nam-Prasanga’, suffered from stomach ache, vomiting and loose motion. Around 2:00 am, as many as six people of the village were admitted at Dhakuakhana Subdivisional Civil Hospital as their health condition severely deteriorated.
On Sunday morning, though they were discharged from the hospital, more affected people of the village with the same complaints began to come to the Dhakuakhana Subdivisional Civil Hospital and Dhemaji Civil Hospital from 10:00 am. Around 104 people of the village were affected in the food poisoning case and most of them had to undergo medical treatment at Dhakuakhana Civil Hospital by accommodating themselves in the verandah of the 30-bedded hospital. One of them was referred to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital because of his critical condition. On Sunday, Lakhimpur District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan and high-level officers of the District Health Services visited the Dhakuakhana Civil Hospital to monitor the situation.
On Monday, when contacted regarding the issue, Joint Director of District Health Services, Lakhimpur, Dr Gunin Kumar Gogoi informed this correspondent that the crisis was over. Most of the affected people have left the hospital. Currently, around 10 patients are undergoing treatment at Dhakuakhana Civil Hospital. “Their health condition is improving. They will also be discharged soon,” Dr Gogoi said.
