Assam: Forest Department Recovers Teak Wood From Miscreants

HAMREN: The forest department personnel were able to seize a sizeable consignment of wooden planks during an operation carried out in the West Karbi Anglong District.

Carrying out an operation based on specific inputs, a team from the Kheroni Forest Division was able to recover a sizeable consignment of the hardwood that was illegally felled by unknown timber smugglers. The consignment was captured from the Sengseng Beel of the district.

The authorities also informed that the miscreants wanted to move the timber via the Kopili River to Hojai and thereafter send the same to other locations. Also, the financial value of the captured consignment is said to be about Rs 60 thousand. They also informed that the search is on to detect those behind the incident and ensure proper punishment for them.

In the West Karbi Anglong district of the state, the Kheroni forest area has been quietly transforming into a sinister haven for illegal poaching and timber smuggling. Recent developments have shed light on the alarming extent of this issue, with a daring operation conducted by Kheroni forest officials bringing it to the forefront. During the operation, forest authorities intercepted a Tata mobile vehicle heavily laden with illegally acquired timber. The vehicle bore the license plate number AS-01-FC-0421, and it was in the midst of a clandestine mission to transport timber from Dima Hasao to Lanka, cloaked by the veil of darkness.

The raiding team, composed of vigilant forest department personnel, acted swiftly to thwart the illicit timber trade. However, the perpetrators and their cohorts managed to slip away into the shadows upon spotting the approaching authorities. Despite their escape, the forest officials successfully seized the vehicle, laden with precious cargo - timber harvested illegally from the forest's precious resources.

The situation in the Kheroni forest is deeply concerning, with illegal activities like poaching and timber smuggling on the rise. These actions not only pose a severe threat to the forest's delicate ecosystem but also disrupt the livelihoods of local communities who rely on the forest's resources in sustainable ways.
