GUWAHATI: Naren Sonowal, a former MLA from Dibrugarh's Naharkatia Assembly constituency, was detained on Thursday for allegedly engaging in gambling-related crimes.

In the course of an operation in the city's suburb of Boiragimoth, a squad of Dibrugarh police detained Sonowal. Six other people were detained by the police in connection with the investigation.

Mukul Ghosh, Mehroz Ahmed, Dipendra Dutta, Ritwik Baruah, Abdul Rashid, and Dipak Ranjan have been named as the individuals.

A case has been filed under the applicable laws against the people who were arrested. To find more connections, an inquiry is being conducted.

Naren Sonowal was a Naharkatia Assembly constituency resident and a legislator for the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) party. An analysis by the Delhi-based organisation, Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) indicated that Sonowal was the richest legislator among serving MLAs in 2021, with stated assets totalling Rs 33 crore.

According to reports, the former MLA had a phenomenal 339,460,623 rupees in assets, of which 23,267,176 were movable and 316,193,447 were immovable.

A man from Assam was given a seven-year severe prison sentence for involvement in terrorist activities on Wednesday by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Bengaluru.

Arif Hussain is also required to pay a fine of Rs 53,000. He was detained in 2020 on suspicion of having ties to Jamaat-e-Islami and Muhideen Bangladesh. In this case, the court has already found seven people guilty.

Special public prosecutor P. Prasanna Kumar informed that Hussain was a part of a JMB-initiated plot to produce explosive devices (IEDs). In order to raise money for JMB's terrorist activities, he took part in a scam that was carried out by the organisation, according to Kumar. He is a co-accused in the Bodh Gaya blast case.
