Assam: Gargaon College celebrates Kati Bihu

SIVASAGAR: Gargaon College’s Assamese Department celebrated Kati Bihu in the college campus.

Offering greetings to all present, Pranab Dowarah, Head of the Assamese Department, told the students to feel by heart the significance of Kati Bihu and its deep relation with the socio-economic life of the Assamese people. He also rendered thanks to IQAC Coordinator Dr Surajit Saikia for taking initiative in erecting a permanent plinth for a basil tree in the campus of the department.

Vice Principal Dr Rina Handique too talked of the relevance of observing such a festivity which is inseparably related with the agrarian and economic life of Assam. All the teachers, employees and students, including associate professors Nilakhi Chetia and Runjun Hazarika lit the lamp and made offerings at the plinth of the basil tree.

Speaking on the occasion, assistant professor Debajani Bakalial observed that the front yard with a basil tree is an ever-familiar sight of each and every Assamese family. Dwelling upon the medicinal potentialities of the basil tree and its spiritual significance, Bakalial urged upon the need to plant a basil tree, which is the spiritual emblem of both Assamese and Indian culture.

The Principal of the college, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta expressed happiness at such an initiative of the department and noted that such efforts would strongly inspire the youths towards the folk cultures of their own society.
