SIVASAGAR: Gargaon College, under the aegis of the department of Assamese, organized the annual event known as ‘Pragya Sandhani Divas’ and ‘Ghana Gogoi Memorial Award Ceremony’ recently. The formal meeting of the programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Dr Manjumoni Gogoi, head of the department of History. Following the ‘smriti tarpan’, the programme was inaugurated by Dr Rina Handique, Vice Principal of the college.

In her address, Dr Handique appreciated the efforts of the department in conducting such a significant programme. She urged the students to develop a sense of duty and responsibility in order to become good human beings. Noted scholar on Krishna Culture and Former head of the department of Assamese of Gargaon College, Dr Arundhati Mahanta was invited as the chief guest on the occasion.

In an enlightening talk, Dr Mahanta deliberated upon the conventions of pronunciation in the Assamese language and elucidated several significant aspects pertaining to correct pronunciation. She further emphasized upon the need to undertake extensive study in order to learn good pronunciation.

As part of the day-long programme, the departmental wall magazine was inaugurated by former Professor of the department of Assamese, Dr Durlov Buragohain and Vice Principal, Dr Rina Handique. Dr Jitu Saikia, Assistant Professor of the department of English, Manurama Phukon, President of Gargaon College Teachers’ Unit, Pranab Dowerah, Head of the department of Assamese, Nilakhi Chetia, Runjun Hazarika, Priyama Dehingia, Associate Professors of the department of Assamese, Devajani Bakolial and Dr Ankur Dutta, Assistant Professors of the department of Assamese along with teachers and students from various departments were present on the occasion.

The Ghana Gogoi Memorial Award instituted in the name of Late Ghana Gogoi, the first head of the department of Assamese was conferred this year on Karabi Gogoi, who secured the highest position among the students of the department of Assamese in the BA final examination under Dibrugarh University. The students successfully completing their degrees from the department were also felicitated on the occasion. Moreover, the newly admitted students from the department showcased their talents in a cultural function held as part of the programme. Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, eminent academician, columnist and Principal of Gargaon College congratulated the department of Assamese for working in the area of encouraging the talents of students and moulding their personalities.
