Assam Gorkha Sanmellan hails government's decision on Gorkha settlers

UDALGURI: The Assam Gorkha Sanmellan (AGS) has expressed their gratitude to the Government of Assam for resolving the long-standing demands of Gorkhas in Assam. The State Government has taken a cabinet decision recognizing Gorkha community people as a protected class in the tribal belts and blocks areas in Assam.

Earlier, notification had categorically mentioned that the graziers and cultivators of the community were protected in the area. Down the years, the people of the community were forced to take up other livelihoods. Moreover, there is no authority to issue grazier certificate in the present times. AGS and other organizations in Assam had been demanding that the words graziers and cultivators should be replaced by Gorkha community. The State Government took the decision to replace the words on Wednesday. Lakshmi Sedai, the general secretary of AGS, hailed the cabinet decision, terming it as a great victory for the Gorkha community people in Assam.
