Guwahati: The Assam government is all set to appoint Olympic boxer Lovlina Borgohain as the Deputy Superintendent of Police in the state.
This was decided in a cabinet meeting held on Thursday in Guwahati and was informed by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu who said that the appointment of Lovlina Borgohain as the DSP in the state police was approved by the Assam Cabinet.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also confirmed the same and said, "We have cleared appointment of Lovlina Borgohain as DSP."
According to official sources, the boxer and Olympian will be initially appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police on probation.
This year has been very fruitful for Lovlina Borgohain after she proved her mettle by winning a bronze medal in boxing in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics 2021.
She has also been nominated for the prestigious Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award 2021 along with other athletes such as Olympic gold-medalist Neeraj Chopra, captain of India's women's team Mithali Raj and footballer Sunil Chetri.
The pair of gloves that were worn by the boxer during her performance in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 had previously drawn the highest bid among the Hero items featured in Prime Minister's Mementos e-Auction, reflecting her popularity in the field of sports. The pair of gloves that were initially set at a base price of Rs. 80 lakh received a total bid of Rs. 1.92 crores.
