GUWAHATI: Friday's assembly speech by Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, was interrupted by opposition lawmakers over a Maharashtra MLA's comments on the alleged consumption of dog meat by residents of the northeastern state of Assam.
On the first day of the budget session, Kataria was forced to cut his address short after opposition MLAs got up and yelled questions about what had been done to the lawmaker.
Prahar Janshakti Party MLA Bachchu Kadu had suggested in the Maharashtra Assembly that stray dogs be moved to Assam to help curb the state's growing stray dog population because the people there eat dogs.
As Kataria started to talk, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha brought up the subject. Akhil Gogoi, also urged that the governor should address this matter in his speech.
Kataria had to cut short his statement as the opposition MLAs continued to raise their demands regarding the issue.
For his comments about transferring stray dogs from Maharashtra to Assam while people here enjoy dog meat, the Assam Congress has filed a FIR against Maharashtra MLA Bacchu Kadu.
At the Dispur police station in Guwahati on Tuesday, Assam Pradesh Mahilla Congress General Secretary Banashree Gogoi filed a police report.
Mira Borthakur, the president of the Assam Pradesh Mahilla Congress, said, "Mr. Bacchu Kadu has humiliated the people of Assam with his nasty statement."
What's more astonishing is that the Assam Police have said absolutely nothing about this matter, yet the same police have either travelled to Gujarat to arrest Jignesh Mevani or deported Pawan Khera and required Supreme Court intervention to free him, she added. She also questioned Himanta Biswa Sarma's silence on the matter as the chief minister of Assam.
Kadu made the remarks in response to a discussion regarding the danger presented by street dogs that was initiated by MLAs Pratap Sarnaik and Atul Bhatkhalkar in the Maharashtra Legislature.
