GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated his Government's commitment to make Guwahati a flood free city.

CM Sarma stated, "We are committed to make Guwahati free from artificial floods."

He made this statement after meeting officials from central agencies and other stakeholders on Sunday. In the meeting held at the Janata Bhawan, the issue of recurring artificial floods in the city during the monsoon season was discussed.

As per information, the Assam Chief Minister asked the officials from the central agencies present in the meet "to take immediate necessary steps" to solve the perennial problem in Guwahati city.

It is further known the CM Sarma has asked the central agencies and other stakeholders to initiate measures. This includes cleaning and de-siltation of the network of drains in the city.

The Chief Minister also suggested for restructuring existing infrastructure wherever needed.

It may be mentioned here that back in the month of July this year, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority or GMDA launched the 'Mission Flood-Free Guwahati'.

This ambitious mission from the GMDA aimed at dealing with the artificial flood issue in Guwahati City by establishing a coordination with other allied departments. However, it was reported that both Kamrup (Metro) District Administration and Kamrup (Metro) District Disaster Management Authority were not included in the mission.

According to the GMDA, the water logging problem in Guwahati is mainly caused by rainwater coming from neighbouring Meghalaya and the surrounding hills. The problem which has now turned into an annual calamity has caused extensive damage to the infrastructure besides destroying private property over the years.

Apart from rainwaters coming in from Meghalaya, rapid urbanization with increased housing and construction activities leading to an increase in the number of buildings and streets is another prime cause behind the artificial floods.
