Guwahati: Ahead of Bakrid, the Assam government has shot a letter to Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of each district in the state, to ensure no illegal killing or sacrifice of animals takes place.
The Joint Secretary to the Government of Assam, KK Sharma, in its letter cited a reference letter from the Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India order regarding stopping of illegal killing/sacrifice of Cows/Calves, Camels and other animals.
''With reference to the subject cited above, I am directed to enclose herewith a copy of letter No. 9 - 2/2019-20/PCA dated 7" June 2022, along with its enclosures, received from the Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India regarding stopping of illegal killing/sacrifice of Cows/Calves, Camels and other animals and taking action against the offenders for violation of Transport of Animals Rules on the occasion of Bakrid and request you kindly to look into the matter and take necessary action within your jurisdictional area accordingly,'' the letter read.
Apart from Assam, the Tripura government has also issued special guidelines for animal sacrifices and any kind of illegal slaughtering and transportation of cattle has been banned ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.
DK Chakma, director of the animal husbandry department, clarified that as per the guidelines, animal sacrifice has been permitted and the Tripura government has no intention of hurting any religious sentiments whatsoever.
Chakma also dismissed the rumors circulating that the Tripura government has imposed a blanket ban on animal sacrifice.
