Guwahati: The Assam government has dismissed Nandita Konwar -- the Assam Civil Service officer -- after she was convicted in a case related to bribery.

According to reports, the ACS officer had demanded money for the release of payment over Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) at the time, when she was serving as the Project Director in Dist Rural Development Agency of Kamrup metro in 2017.

In the year 2017, Konwar was caught red-handed while taking bribe. She was then presented in the court of the Special Judge of Assam.

After numerous hearings, the court convicted Konwar vide order dated April 2021 in Special case No. 22/2017 under section 7/13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.

Konwar was sentenced by the court to rigorous imprisonment for three years along with a penalty of Rupees 12,000 in default imprisonment of 1 month under PC Act section 7.

The court further sentenced her to undergo continuous imprisonment for the time period of 4 years and a fine of Rupees 20,000 in default imprisonment of 2 months under PC Act 1988 section 13(2).

Following the development, on Monday, the Personnel Department has issued an order which stated that Nandita Konwar being dismissed from her service.

The decision came after the approval of state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and after a thorough examination of the previous court order.

She was also arrested by the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau of Assam police in 2015 for allegedly taking bribes from one of the members of an NGO called Duga Sarovar Unnayan Samity.

Konwar was detained by police for demanding money from the adviser of the NGO and she succeeded in receiving a total amount of Rupees 12,000.
