Assam: Govt to Eliminate Police Force Vacancies with 5,000 Recruits, Says CM
GUWAHATI: Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Thursday the state government's ambitious plan to transform the Assam Police into a zero-vacancy force in India. Sarma made this announcement during an induction program for 1,861 recently trained police personnel.
These recruits will be deployed to various locations across the state to enhance law enforcement efforts. Sarma revealed that the advertisement for recruiting an additional 5,000 young individuals to the state police department will be released on October 7. This significant recruitment drive aims to eliminate all vacant positions within the Assam Police.
"The advertisement to recruit 5,000 youths to the state police department will be out on October 7. We have decided to make the state police a zero-vacancy force. Shortly, there will not be any vacant posts in the Assam Police," Sarma stated during a press briefing.
To further improve the Assam Police, several new measures have been introduced. One such initiative involves addressing the issue of overweight police personnel. The state government has decided to offer the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) to obese police officers after a designated period if they fail to meet weight loss targets.
In August, it is worth mentioning that the Assam Police conducted the first-ever measurement of the body mass index (BMI) for all police officials across the state. This exercise was carried out in every district under the supervision of Assam's Director General of Police (DGP), G.P. Singh, who also participated by measuring his own BMI.
DGP Singh set a deadline for overweight police personnel to shed excess weight by November this year, failing which they would be eligible for the VRS. Sarma emphasized that individuals with obesity cannot continue their service in the state police department and will be offered the VRS following government procedures.
The Assam government's efforts to eliminate police force vacancies and promote better health among its officers reflect its commitment to improving law enforcement in the state.
