Guwahati: Assam's Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced that each girl student who secured first division marks during the state-conducted Class 12 examinations shall be given a scooter under the Pragyan Bharati scheme of the state government.
"22,000 girl students had secured first division marks in the Higher Secondary examination and we will now give a scooter to every single one of them so that they can travel to their respective colleges", Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
According to the Himanta Biswa Sarma, each scooty that shall be given to the meritorious girl students shall cost approximately Rs 50,000-55,000.
Sarma further prognosticated that the scooties shall be given away to the girl students by October 15.
The minister further announced a website (sebaonline.org) where the students can choose whether to opt for electric scooties or conventional scooties.
"If they do not log in to the website to choose the type of scooty, we will consider that they are opting for free scooties. They shall not be able to sell these scooties for at least 3 years", Sarma said.
The government, however, shall not provide the cost for registering the vehicles or helmets, Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The Minister also added that in a latest move, 197 private High Schools of Assam, 9 private Higher Secondary schools, and 149 private junior colleges will be provincialized. 27 new colleges will also be added to the public sector, he added.
As per Sarma, a total of 355 educational institutions will be made a part of the public sector as a part of the latest initiative.
The list of the provincialisation will be available at the official websites of departments of senior secondary and higher education.
The next list of provincialization, Sarma announced, shall be announced at the beginning of November.
