Assam Govt To Honour Soldiers Who Fought In 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a recent announcement said that the soldiers who took part in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 will be honoured.

On Monday 18 April, the CM held meetings with the concerned officials and ministers to discuss about the upcoming event in which the brave soldiers would be honoured.

As informed by the chief minister the soldiers will be honoured on Saturday 23 April in an event that will be organized in Guwahati city.

CM Sarma shared the news on Monday after his meeting with ministers and informed that the chief guest of the event will be Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

There are many soldiers and defence personnel from the region of the northeast who played a very crucial role in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 but very little is known about their sacrifice and acts said, Sarma.

He added that these soldiers and officers from the northeastern region trained and equipped thousands of freedom fighters of the Mukti Bahini to fight against the Pakistani soldiers.

It may be mentioned that during the 9-month-long war in 1971, thousands of civilians and security personnel from the states of the northeast had extended support to the freedom of Bangladesh called Mukti Yoddha.

However, during that time over 20 lakh, Bangladeshi refugees entered Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura and took shelter in different parts of the states.

The Bangladesh War of Independence from 26 March 1971 to 16 December 1971 was an armed conflict and a revolution sparked by the rise of the Bengali nationalist in erstwhile East Pakistan which resulted in Bangladesh becoming an independent country.
