Guwahati: The Assam government has ordered a ban on the plying of private ferries. The order has been implemented with immediate effect.

The Assam government has stated that private ferries do not have marine engines and therefore, make use of single engines to operate their boats. Now, all private ferries have been banned from plying since they do not have marine engines.

Further, the Assam government has offered a grant of 10 lakh rupees with an additional subsidy of 75 per cent to those boat owners who wish change their single engines to marine engines.

He also added that a set of SOPs will soon be issued to schedule the health check-ups of those who work on the boats.

This information was shared by Assam Chief Minister on his official Twitter handle. He wrote, "From today, plying of private ferries will be stopped as they don't have marine engine. If owners wish to convert single engine to marine engine, GoA will provide grant of Rs 10 lakh with 75% subsidy. SoP will be issued to schedule health check ups of those working on boats."

This order was issued after the tragic Assam boat accident that shook the state on Wednesday. 87 passengers have been rescued so far while two are still missing and one has been confirmed dead.
