Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to bear the bill for 70MW of power for 20 lakh people every month.

Under the Orunodoi scheme, the state proposes to alleviate the financial woes of 20 lakh beneficiaries of the state immediately by providing necessary income support and these beneficiaries will get Rs. 1,250 per month out of which Rs. 250 will be paid as electricity bill.

''For 20 lakh people, around 70MW of power will be free and the government will transfer Rs 1250 in their accounts and Rs 250 is meant to pay power bills. Power utility will send the bill and accordingly, beneficiaries will pay,'' Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was quoted as saying by the Economic Times.

Notably, in its budget for 2022-23, the state government had increased the amount under its flagship scheme 'Orunodoi' to Rs 1250 per month from Rs 1000.

He further informed that from August 15 this year to September 15, the state government will observe Orunodoi month and another 6 lakh beneficiaries will be added.

''Those whose economic position has improved will be moved out, '' he said.

Recently, the tariff of Rs 0.59 per unit of electricity for consumers was approved by the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission.
