GUWAHATI: Assam government is expected to provide COVID-19 booster vaccine doses to the frontline workers soon.

Speaking to the media Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi already insisted to give booster doses to the frontline workers, i.e. health workers.

Pointing out that several Western world countries have already launched the booster doses vaccination drives he added, "The risk factors of frontline workers, i. e. the health workers are very high. So, the booster doses should be given."

Although Assam has so far reported no Omicron case, Dr Sarma appealed to all people to maintain utmost caution and follow COVID appropriate behaviour. He added that India reported a large number of Omicron cases and hence all the people should follow COVID appropriate behaviour. "Assam has reported not a single Omicron case till now. But people have to follow COVID appropriate behaviour as some other parts of the country reported Omicron cases. Our Prime Minister also appealed to the people to do so," he said.

"We have all experienced that healthcare and frontline workers have made a major contribution in the country's fight against the coronavirus," PM Modi said.

He added, "They [healthcare workers] even today spend a lot of time in service of Covid patients."

"This is why as a precaution, the government has decided to initiate administration of a 'precaution dose' for frontline and healthcare workers. This initiative will begin from January 10, 2022," PM Modi announced.

Dr Sarma also said that Assam will launch COVID vaccination for 15-18 age group people from January 3, 2022 like other parts of the country. After completion of the vaccination of them, the government is expected to launch the vaccination for the 12-15 age group people.

Meanwhile, the Assam government announced a new Standard Operating Procedure ( SOP) for COVID- 19 management which came into effect on Sunday, December 2021.
