GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to provide free vaccines to people in the age group of 18-45 years.
It is to be mentioned here that the state government shall procure the vaccines from the funds collected in Assam Arogya Nidhi in the year 2020.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has placed the order of vaccine for 1 Cr Doses with Bharat Biotech.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Assam State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "Assam will give FREE vaccines to everyone from 18-45 years. GOI is giving free vaccines for 45 +. Funds collected in Assam Arogya Nidhi last year shall be utilized for the procurement of vaccines. Today itself, we've placed orders for 1 cr doses with @BharatBiotech."
Meanwhile, the centre on April 19 has announced that all above 18 years of people will be vaccinated in "a liberalized and accelerated Phase 3 strategy of COVID-19 vaccination", the government said in a statement.
The decision comes on a day when India reported a new record high of 2.73 lakh cases in a day. India has crossed 1.5 crore COVID cases.
So far, only those above 45 years are being vaccinated, preference being given to frontline workers.
"Government has been working hard for over a year to ensure that maximum numbers of Indians are able to get the vaccine in the shortest possible of time," PM Modi said.
The government has been taking several measures to ensure that vaccines are available.
