Guwahati: As a mark of respect for Sati Sadhani, who was the last queen of the Chutia dynasty, the Assam Government has decided to set up a University in her name in Upper Assam's Golaghat. The Bill to set up this new University was approved by the Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday (September 2).

Making the declaration on the floor, Assam Education Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the university would be set up in memory of the queen. Sarma said that discussions had been held with members of the Chutia community as to how best to keep the memory of the queen alive and bring her to a new generation. After a series of deliberations, Sarma said, it was decided upon to open a University in her name.

"The university will be the first to be established after the implementation of the National Education Policy. So, we will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach following the objectives of the NEP" the Minister said, confirming that the University will follow the new guidelines which the state education machinery has already taken steps towards implementing.

"Golaghat district hasn't had many academic institutions," Sarma said, adding, "Our government had earlier established an engineering college, and now, we are proposing to set up the Birangana Sati Sadhani State University in the district."
