GUWAHATI: In a significant development in the ongoing battle against crime, Assam police have apprehended seven individuals involved in a spree of cell phone snatchings in the city of Guwahati. The arrests were made in two separate cases, and two of the suspects sustained injuries during an attempt to evade custody. Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah revealed that the arrested individuals, all local youths, have confessed to their involvement in multiple cell phone snatchings in different areas of the city. Their motive behind these thefts was to finance their drug addiction using the proceeds from selling stolen cell phones.

The arrests were made in two separate cases, each involving multiple perpetrators. The first case led to the apprehension of Dhanjit Boro, known as Naga (25); Sanjeev Baishya (31); Biswajit Rabha (25); Abhijit Rabha (20); and Ujjal Rabha, also known as Ajay Rabha (26). These individuals were found to be responsible for numerous cell phone snatchings in the Geetanagar area of Guwahati. The second case resulted in the arrest of Jitu Boro and Lobo Boro, both aged 25, and Mahibul Hoque (26), who were involved in similar crimes in the Panbazar area.

During the investigation, the police recovered a substantial number of cell phones, as well as a scooter that had been utilized in the snatchings. Additionally, they seized a considerable sum of money, earned from selling the stolen cell phones. It was revealed that the accused had been selling the looted cell phones, which were worth between Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000, for meager amounts ranging from Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 to different gangs. They also utilized scooters, preferably, for snatching cell phones and then abandoned them after the crimes.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah expressed concern about the accused youths' drug addiction, indicating that they squandered all their earnings on drugs and fast food within a day or two. The police are now focused on apprehending the mastermind behind the drug supply chain and the gang responsible for purchasing the stolen cell phones from the arrested individuals.

During the arrests, two of the suspects, Abhijit Rabha and Mahibul Hoque, were injured in police firing. According to police reports, Abhijit Rabha was injured when he attempted to attack a police constable with an iron rod, while Mahibul Hoque was injured when he tried to attack a police officer with a concrete block. Both injured individuals are presently receiving medical treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The Guwahati Police Commissioner described the arrests as a significant victory in the ongoing fight against cell phone snatching in Guwahati. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police to help combat such crimes in the future. As the investigation continues, the authorities are determined to dismantle the entire network responsible for these unlawful activities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
